POLL: PHP Version
« on: August 07, 2011, 08:39:15 PM »
Which version of PHP are you currently using with your Joomla site?

Joomla 1.5 will run on PHP 4 and 5, but Joomla 1.6 and 1.7 both require at least PHP 5.2.4.

Simple Review is currently built using PHP 4, but PHP 5 has already been out for around 7 years now and is vastly superior to PHP 4.

I currently test Simple Review with the following configurations:
* Joomla 1.5 PHP 4 with SEF off
* Joomla 1.5 PHP 4 with SEF on
* Joomla 1.5 PHP 5 with SEF off
* Joomla 1.5 PHP 5 with SEF on
* Joomla 1.6 PHP 5 with SEF off
* Joomla 1.6 PHP 5 with SEF on
* Joomla 1.7 PHP 5 with SEF off
* Joomla 1.7 PHP 5 with SEF on

Because of the how time consuming it is to test against the above configurations I am considering dropping support for PHP 4 in the next major Simple Review release. The reason is not solely due to testing times, PHP 5 is much better to develop in, provides better features and will increase development productivity while reducing the amount of bugs.

So please vote now or forever hold your peace.

My shared hosting provider stopped providing PHP4 last year. Most other components I see have done the same as you propose.

Good to know, also PHP 4 hasn't been supported by its creators for a while now.

The next big version of SR will be cleaned up and have new features, so it makes sense to start upgrading to PHP 5 during that development cycle.

Probably every hosting provider uses PHP5 now, it's really hard to find one without php5 support.

========EDIT========
Using GoDaddy & HostGator, both said "good bye" to PHP4. 8)
