Set canonical URL

Hello row!

I hope you will be fine.
My suggestion, if it doesn't exists and I have missed it, is to implement canonical URLs, setting canonical the first URL and no canonical the paginations. I think it would be really usefull.

Thank you and best regards!!

Hi,

I set the canonical url when using the filter. I am not an expert on canonical urls, but why wouldn't you want it on the paged results?

Pacificador:
Hi!

Which filter? I don't understand fine enough.

Well, I'm not an expert either, but reading and looking, I have seen that all components that configure canonicalization only set canonical the first or principal URL; the others are variables of first, so Google must know that the most important (not the only) is the first.
In addition, by this way, it seems that Google doesn't consider duplicates tittles or metadescriptions because it knows they are parts of the same article.
For example:
http://www.myweb.es/analisis/2-analisis/24-white-knight-chronicles?start=1
http://www.myweb.es/analisis/2-analisis/24-white-knight-chronicles?start=2
They are derivatives of
http://www.myweb.es/analisis/2-analisis/24-white-knight-chronicles

But the three have the same tittle "White Knight Chronicles" and same description, and Google doesn't know which is the principal without canonical URL and "adverts" you of duplicated tittle and description.
Oh, I have remembered right know that an important reason of setting the canonical URL is to concentrate the PageRank in it; if not, the PageRank is dispersed and "loses power".

I don't know very well why it is like that, but I'm sure that is it, acording to I have seen.

Regards!

Hi,

Sorry I was referring to the review listing page, but I now understand your suggestion.  However, I am not sure that having canonical URLs for paged reviews is appropriate:

--- Quote ---Must the content on a set of pages be similar to the content on the canonical version?

Yes. The rel="canonical" attribute should be used only to specify the preferred version of many pages with identical content (although minor differences, such as sort order, are okay).
--- End quote ---
http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=139394

It seems like this would only be appropriate if there was also a link to view the entire review without any paging: http://www.seroundtable.com/seo-canonical-pagination-13094.html

I will look further into this for the next release. Please let me know if you have anymore thoughts on this.

Thanks

Pacificador:
Well, it seems that you are absolutely right!
http://www.joomlablogger.net/seo/joomla-seo/how-to-use-canonical-links-with-joomla-to-avoid-duplicate-content/

So sorry, I'm a little confused right now ::)

In the other hand, I have understand too that it works to concentrate PageRank in a certain page, so I'm trying it right now with canonical only in first page of articles (Maybe I can obtain more PageRank in first page, less in the rest, but more results if someone search my review (I hope he won't find a certain number page)) Another reason because I'm doing it, is because Joomla makes bad URL pagination (addin to original URL "?start=numberofpage"), so I don't know if Google thinks it's the same page and I don't trust, hehe (components like AceSEF makes well pagination URLs; I will try it after this first experiment and will set canonical all pages). This only was a "knwoledge" exchange.

But no worry! probably you don't care about this thread, which must be very difficult; I have found this module (http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/site-management/seo-a-metadata/url-canonicalization-/7465) that do the work on the whole site or the section you select. You only have to indicate which suffix must be omitted like canonical: for example:
http://www.myweb.net/about/?source=google
You write in on of the rules of the module "source=" and if you look at source code of this page, the canonical URL will be http://www.myweb.net/about/ It's very easy to use and uninstall, if you want to try it.

So you would maybe want to make an extension for AceSEF (http://www.joomace.net/downloads/acesef/extensions) instead of my first suggestion (Of course I don't know how difficult can it be!)

A little question, please: will version 4 be upgradeable from previous version 3.x.x? like all the others you have.

Thank you!!
